Half Mag / Half Zine

In life, we all have our talents and subjects we are good at, be it art, languages or sports.

But one that really stumps a lot of people and leaves their brains feeling a little frazzled is maths.

If you’ve found yourself struggling with common mathematical problems, then a new TikTok account might be just the thing you need.

A mechanical engineer named Tanya Zakowich is posting videos on the sharing platform under the name @pinkpencilmath, explaining simple methods to work out all sorts of problems, including long division and angles.

Two of Tanya’s videos in particular have captured a lot of attention, in which she shows viewers how to work out any percentage.

In the clip, she explained: “Here’s an easy trick on calculating percentages.

“Let’s find 16% of 24.

“First split 16% into 10%, 5% and 1%.

“Now 10% of 24, you move one decimal place over, is 2.4.

“5% is half of 10, so half of 2.4 is 1.2. Then 1% of 24, move two decimal places over and it’s 0.24.

“Now add all those up together and you get 3.8.”

In her second video, Tanya shows how to find 30% of 70.

She begins by explaining that both number have zeros, so all you do is cross out the zeros, take what is leftover and multiply it.

So in this case you would do 3 x 7 which is 21.

Therefore 30% of 70 is 21.

More than 300,000 people watched her original clip, with it garnering over 31,000 likes.

Hundreds of people also commented on the video to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: “Thank you so much, this will help me do things faster!”

Another said: “You are doing great! Thank you.”

A third replied: “Awesome.”

“This is way better than what I was doing,” admitted someone else.

A different user added: “Good one! This is really helpful!”
